Sept. 14 By Alex Eaker
"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer." - F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Every summer passes like an echo-we can hear its beauty drift off into a void that becomes Fall. And while we adore the shade of the reds, oranges, and yellows of October and November, we often catch ourselves adrift in the nostalgia that was last summer. We live life with passion in the heat and the sun; a time when family can come together by a pool or a grill. We remember a day on the boat, or getting caught out in a sun shower. We get to live our lives like a siesta-enjoying lunches filled with fresh vegetables blooming from the garden and a crisp rose, perhaps.
And, of course, there are the kids. Perhaps, one is away at camp while the other stays home practicing Cielo incessantly around the house. Be proud of them both. Soon they'll be using summers as their own getaways, but for now they treat it like an unlimited resource. We remember this mindset all too well. But we understand their bliss, after all, it's not always easy to resist the finer things once those warm summer nights invite you to relax. We remember, it's a constant balance between family, fun, relaxation, and work. We know all too well the importance of maintaining this balance: work and play can feel symbiotic, and money may seem less fragile in the summer.
What changes for us once the summer ends? First off, we remember how much the heating bills rise once December comes. We also continue to build. To re-calibrate our focus; to continue on our path towards self-improvement, stability, and financial freedom, so that we can enjoy those days with the family or that extra glass of wine when the time comes. While summer is temporary, the memories last, blooming again and again each year. We don't let it slip away. We don't let it go to waste. But we remember to continue building for the next.
